FUMC CLASS GUIDELINES FOR USHERING

Because members of several different classes are now involved in ushering to raise funds for support of their class outreach ministries, the following guidelines have been developed to continue the success of this project.

Purpose:  For SMU McFarlin Auditorium house managers, classes provide a convenient source of mature, responsible women and men who can follow instructions, deal in a friendly manner with event patrons, and respond appropriately in emergency situations. For FUMC classes, ushering provides an opportunity to raise funds for their class ministries and at the same time see some unique programs.

Network Liaison:  The Aldersgate Project coordinator is the liaison with the house managers.  The managers notify the coordinator of event dates, times, and numbers of ushers needed as far in advance as possible.  The coordinator in turn contacts a designated person in each class with the information.  The class coordinator then recruits as many users as are needed and notifies the project coordinator.  Depending on the size of the event, the number of ushers needed may vary from less than 12 to a normal maximum of 22.  When the usher request is 12, Doublaires and Class, Etc. will each furnish 5 and Aldersgate will furnish two.  When the usher request is 22, Doublaires and Class, Etc. will each furnish 9 and Aldersgate will furnish 4.

Eligibility:  Persons 20 years and over are eligible to usher.  Any underage person accompanying an usher must:  1.  Have a ticket to the event;  2.  Not enter the conference room;  3.  Need no supervision from the usher.

Time Commitment:  Whether it is an evening or matinee event, ushers are expected to appear and sign in one and a half (1 1/2) hours before the house doors open.  This allows time for the house manager to give verbal instructions regarding managing the event patrons, review emergency procedures, make station assignments, and at times, for ushers to stuff programs.  We are paid for a minimum of three (3) hours.  For most performances ushers will be needed for more than three hours.  Every effort will be made to anticipate extended hours and if necessary have a second group of ushers to relieve the first crew.

Dress:  At SMU, ushers are expected to be well groomed. “Church” or business attire for women and slacks for men are the appropriate dress. All volunteers will be expected to wear black vests furnished by McFarlin.

Parking:  House managers are responsible for arranging free usher parking after 5PM and on weekends in the lot behind McFarlin Auditorium.  However, for weekday performances, ushers will need to find parking in other areas.

Understanding:
1Classes are paid for supplying ushers who are responsible to the house managers.  Arriving on time and ushering as directed by the house manager are essential to satisfy contracts with event venue clients.
2.Although ushers are volunteering their time to support their class projects, SMU views ushers as employees, not volunteers, because we are being paid by SMU.
3.No sitting at the auditorium doors prior to performance during intermission or at the end of the performance.
4.No eating in the lobby before, during, or after the performance.  You may eat before (in the usher room), and at intermission in the usher room.
5.SMU has requested that shortly after the performance starts, 2 or 3 ushers sit inside in the handicapped area (if available) to assist anyone who leaves during the performance.  Ushers may rotate with other ushers who may sit on the lobby benches after the performance starts.  Two ushers are required in the lobby during performance.
6.Put on your “happy face” - - smile and greet patrons attending the performance.
